My mom originally bought a ticket with my brothers name on it for a flight to Las Vegas and now he cannot go..?
So they were going to give me the ticket ( because I really couldnt afford one on my own ) and they wont let her put another name on it! I understand that there are no refunds but you cannot even change a name, what a load of crap. Can anyone explain this to me, or has been in this situation and been able to talk the airline into changing it?

These are rules that came about after 9/11. They've been fairly widely publicized; I'm surprised none of you knew this. The reason they don't allow name changes is because one person could buy a ticket, and then the name could be changed at the airport on the day of the flight. That doesn't leave any time for the various security searches that are done in government databases. It also prevents identity theft and credit card fraud. What if your brother LOST his ticket, but someone else showed up at the airport and said they needed to change the name because he isn't taking the trip but they are? All in all, it may be an inconvenience, but it's sound policy. Most airlines won't give you a refund, but they will allow the person whose name is on the ticket use that ticket as a credit against future travel. Usually that credit has to be used within 1 year of the original departure date. Your brother, in order to use the credit, will have to have the confirmation number from the original ticket AND he's going to need the information from whatever credit card was used to make the original purchase. He may also have to pay additional airfare, if fares go up between now and then, and there may be a fee for changing the travel dates. Sorry. I know it's a headache.

It also depends on the class of the ticket. The less you pay, the less options you have. It sounds like what you have is called a discount leisure fare, which is no chg/no cncl/no ref. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do, except see if they are willing to do a change fee transaction. They will charge you around $100 plus any difference in fares, so this may not be a reasonable option.

Yes, sounds right. You will not be able to fly and need to get your own ticket.

i agree with the first answer. its a good rule and its for security reasons plus it keeps the airlines from doing unecessary work and paying people to reissue tickets all day long... cause you know if everyone had the option to change the name on the ticket... theyd probably change it several times before they go. people cant ever make up their minds. i do think they should lighten up a little. like maybe for a change fee the name can be changed but possibly have an advance notice requirement of 3 days or something. and since most tickets are electronic these days you dont really have to worry about someone losing their ticket.
