Pay more money.

The short answer is to request an upgrade, which, given the current state of affairs, has almost no chance of happening. Failing that, a couple suggestions/recommendations: 1) You could ask if they have upgrades available for sale, and decide if that's something you're willing to do. 2) If you're a member of Virgin's frequent flier programme, mention that (if you have elite status and points/miles, your chances increase). Free upgrades are few and far between; there is a cost to the airline (your free booze/food as a start), plus the airline, if at all possible, is going to try to sell that first class/business class seat before giving it away via upgrade. No offence, but I can almost guarantee you that the airline isn't going to give a free upgrade to someone who isn't a frequent flier (i.e. repeat customer), and has no potential upside to them.

Operational upgrades do happen but only if the economy section is overbooked. Some passengers are then moved to the next cabin. Normally passengers that hold some kind of status in the airlines frequent flier program. But sometimes they just pick people at random (if time doesn't permit more careful selection). So you can have a chance if: 1. Economy is overbooked 2. They pick passengers randomly for upgrade I wouldn't say there is a high probability for this to happen. But if the two criterias are true, then you can't look like a bum. You must be smart casual.
